In a significant step toward improving resources for the homeless, Tampa Hope has begun construction on the 7,000-square-foot “Matthew 25 Community Center” at its shelter in East Tampa. This development follows the recent completion of 99 tiny homes for the homeless at the facility.
Key Features of the Matthew 25 Community Center
- Comprehensive Amenities: The new community center will feature a kitchen and dining area, restrooms, showers, a salon, and a laundry room, making it a central hub for residents.
- Enhanced Shelter Capacity: The Tampa Hope community includes 99 air-conditioned tiny homes, each equipped with a bed, window, and storage space.
- Supportive Services: Tampa Hope provides three daily meals, toiletries, clothing, medical care, life skills and financial management classes, and substance abuse and mental health treatment.
Impact and Future Plans
Since opening in December 2021, Tampa Hope has served over 1,100 clients, with 358 placed in stable housing. The new community center, funded by the generosity of Drew and Susan Peloubet, is expected to enhance these efforts by providing centralized amenities and resources.
Mayor Jane Castor praised the initiative, highlighting the compassionate and considerate approach to addressing homelessness. Catholic Charities Executive Director Maggie Rogers emphasized the importance of this development in moving clients from temporary facilities to stable housing.
The $1.5 million community center is set to open in 2025, continuing Tampa Hope’s mission to support the city’s most vulnerable residents.
