Bruhat Soma, the champion of the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, received a warm welcome from family, friends, and school officials at Tampa International Airport.
“It’s incredible to receive so much recognition for winning a spelling bee,” said Soma. But this wasn’t just any spelling bee—Soma emerged victorious in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the most challenging competitions of its kind.
A Remarkable Achievement
Soma out-spelled 245 contestants from across the nation. His standout moment came during the spell-off round, where he impressively spelled 29 words in just 90 seconds, earning widespread praise and admiration.
“I’ve been dedicated to this goal since the fourth grade, and this past year, I put in even more effort,” Soma shared.
Unyielding Determination
Soma’s journey to victory wasn’t easy. After missing out on his first two attempts, he remained undeterred, dedicating 10 hours each weekend and 6 hours every weekday to rigorous practice.
“I knew I had to work harder to win,” he said. “The previous losses were disappointing but also highly motivating.”
A Legacy of Excellence
Soma’s triumph marks the third time a Tampa Bay student has won the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Last year’s winner, Dev Shah, hails from Largo, and a New Tampa student claimed the title 25 years ago.
“This achievement highlights the excellence of Hillsborough County Public Schools,” said Superintendent Van Ayres. “Our entire board and school district are thrilled for Bruhat. The support and enthusiasm from the community were tremendous.”
Giving Back
Soma’s character shines through in his plans for the $50,000 prize money. “I plan to donate it because there are many people in need,” he said. “Helping others is important to me.”
As he takes a well-deserved break this summer, Soma will also begin working towards his ultimate goal of becoming a doctor.
